Slim double glazing is a sealed unit made with two panes of glass, a much narrower cavity and a low-profile edge system so it can fit window rebates that are too shallow for a conventional double glazed unit. Low-E glass and an inert gas are used to improve thermal performance while keeping the visible edge and overall profile discreet.

We treat each thickness as an engineered build rather than letting customers assemble arbitrary panes and cavities. That gives the ordering journey the simplicity of a modern e-commerce product while keeping the technical specification controlled.

Overall thickness

How thick the complete sealed unit is from outside face to inside face.

It has to fit the available glazing depth in the sash, casement or metal frame.

The sealed gap between the two panes.

Its width affects gas performance and limits what can physically fit inside the unit.

How far the spacer and edge-seal system remains visible in from the edge of the glass.

A heritage unit can be thin overall and still look wrong if its edge system is not hidden by the rebate or putty line.

Rebate cover

The amount of glass edge concealed by the frame, bead or traditional putty line.

It determines whether the spacer and seal disappear visually once the unit is installed.

Why Krypton often appears in slim double glazing

Argon is an excellent, economical fill for conventional double glazing, but it performs best with more cavity depth than many heritage windows can provide. Krypton has lower thermal conductivity and is therefore commonly specified in very narrow cavities. That does not make Krypton a universal rule: the correct gas belongs to the tested or declared build supplied by the manufacturer, and the configurator should follow that build rather than guess.

The coating does a large part of the thermal work

A slim cavity has less room to insulate than a conventional unit, so the glass specification matters. A low-emissivity coating faces the sealed cavity and reduces long-wave heat transfer. The coating product and coated face are manufacturing details, not cosmetic choices; they should travel with the approved build into the production specification.

Slim glazing can be appropriate — but significance and consent come first

Historic England’s current guidance says slim-profile or vacuum double glazing within historic frames will generally be acceptable where the existing frame can accommodate it, while identifying important exceptions such as surviving historic glass, significant glazing bars or frames that cannot support the added thickness or weight. Inserting double glazing into historic windows will usually require Listed Building Consent. Check the specific building and local authority position before ordering.

  • Retain and repair significant historic frames wherever practicable.
  • Do not remove historic glass of interest simply to gain a thermal upgrade.
  • Keep original glazing bars where they contribute to significance.
  • Check that sashes, hinges and balances can carry the additional glass weight.
  • Obtain the required consent before placing a made-to-measure order.

What is the difference between slim double glazing and normal double glazing?

Both are sealed units with two panes of glass. Slim double glazing uses a much smaller overall depth, a narrow cavity and a low-profile edge system so it can suit shallower rebates and finer glazing bars. Standard double glazing normally has more cavity depth and therefore more freedom in the glass and spacer specification.

How thin can slim double glazing be?

The E-Glass Shop engineering model currently carries reference builds from 11.5mm to 16mm overall, while specialist UK systems can be thinner still. The important figure is the approved complete build, not a headline thickness in isolation, because pane thickness, cavity, safety treatment and spacer system all have to be compatible.

What does sightline mean on a slim double glazed unit?

Sightline is the visible distance from the edge of the glass to the inner edge of the spacer and perimeter seal system. In traditional windows, the rebate, bead or putty line needs enough cover to hide that edge detail. It is a separate measurement from the overall thickness of the sealed unit.

Why is sightline important on heritage sash windows?

Traditional glazing bars can be narrow. A sealed unit may fit the rebate depth but still show a dark spacer or edge seal if the sightline is wider than the cover available. Checking both depth and sightline helps preserve the appearance of the original joinery.

Why is Krypton used in slim double glazing?

Krypton has lower thermal conductivity than argon and is commonly used where the cavity is too narrow for argon to work at its most effective gap. The correct fill is still manufacturer-specific, so E-Glass Shop treats gas as part of an approved build rather than a universal upgrade switch.

Does slim double glazing need Low-E glass?

Most high-performance slim constructions use a low-emissivity inner pane because the narrow cavity limits how much insulation the gas space can provide on its own. The coating reduces radiant heat transfer across the cavity. The exact glass and coated surface should follow the manufacturer’s declared construction.

Can slim double glazing be fitted into existing sash windows?

Can slim double glazing use restoration or heritage glass?

Some slim systems can use restoration, drawn, crown-style or other character glass on the outer pane to reduce the polished modern appearance. Availability and safety treatment depend on the specific build and supplier, so the glass must be selected from the approved options for that construction.

Can slim double glazing be toughened or laminated?

Sometimes, but not every very-thin build supports every safety-glass combination. Safety requirements still apply in critical locations, so the correct approach is to choose a slim build that explicitly permits the required toughened or laminated pane rather than substituting it after the build has been selected.

Can slim double glazed units be shaped?

Specialist manufacturers can produce shaped slim units, but geometry, edge construction and manufacturing tolerances make them more build-dependent than standard rectangles. E-Glass Shop treats shaped slim glazing as a controlled or quote-reviewed route unless a supplier has explicitly approved instant manufacture for that shape.

How do I measure for slim double glazing?

Record width and height in millimetres, then confirm the available glazing depth, the required edge cover and any safety, heritage or decorative requirements. Do not order from width and height alone: overall unit thickness and sightline determine whether the sealed unit both fits and looks correct in the frame.

Is secondary glazing better than slim double glazing for an old window?

It depends on the significance and construction of the window. Secondary glazing is reversible and can retain original glass untouched, which can make it preferable for highly significant windows. Slim double glazing is useful where the existing or replica frame can accept a sealed unit with minimal alteration. The right choice should balance heritage significance, appearance, performance and consent.
